Here we go. 20th year! 10th year in 2nd grade! Where has the time gone?! Today I want to talk about what I have learned in the last few years (crazy journey we've been on huh?) It is.... Give yourself grace the first 6 weeks of school! I no longer start the first week of school with the mindset that I'm gonna get up early and workout, come home do a load of laundry, cook a healthy meal etc. etc. NOW I tell myself you may not workout for 6 weeks and it's OK, laundry may pile up (I warn my family), I'm not gonna cook much (I warn my family-actually they know by now). I may let myself stay later at school, maybe even a weekend BUT THEN after 6 weeks are up I implement the rest of it back in my life. This is the best advice I can give to young teacher families. What have you learned about home/work balance??
I love your pictures! What a fun activity!
ReplyDeleteI do the "Claaaasss" "Yessss" thing also. Sometimes only a few of mine respond so I do it a few times in different voices until I feel MOST of them are answering me. If they are really off I'll say "Classs" and they answer "Yessss" then I 'll ask them a question like, "What color is my shirt" that will grab a few more who are curious to see what the answer is. Keep at it! It will work! : )
By the way...I gave you an award on my blog. Stop by and check it out if you have time!

Don't give up! It takes a while before they realize that is their "call to attention." :)
ReplyDeleteAfter a while, it will be second nature to you and them and will work perfectly! One thing I can say is to keep it VERY consistent and VERY simple for the first few weeks - always say the same thing and expect the same response. Then after they are used to it, vary things a bit to keep them on their toes.
It's pretty funny to do this at an assembly because my former 1st graders answer along with my current littles! Even better? I have younger siblings of one of my current littles that use this as the attention getter in their own home. Hee, hee.
Loving the idea of wacky Wednesday!
